About Bayahibe

With the arrival of the Spanish in the late 15th century, led by Christopher Columbus, the region underwent a dramatic transformation. The modern village was officially founded in 1874 by Juan Brito, a Puerto Rican settler who established a small community that would gradually grow over time while maintaining its humble, maritime character.

It wasn’t until the late 20th century that Bayahibe began to gain attention as a tourist destination. Its strategic location near La Romana and its easy access to natural attractions such as Saona Island played a major role in its development. The creation of protected areas like Cotubanamá National Park further enhanced its appeal, promoting eco-tourism, diving, and nature-based experiences.

Today, Bayahibe is recognized as one of the top gateways for excursions in the Dominican Republic. Despite its growth, it still preserves the essence of a traditional fishing village, offering visitors a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty.
